ISTM Research Award Program 2011

The International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM) is committed to the promotion of healthy and safe travel. In cooperation with health care providers, academic centers, the travel industry and the media, ISTM advocates and facilitates education, service, and research activities in the field of travel medicine. This includes: preventive and curative medicine within many specialties such as tropical medicine, infectious diseases, high altitude physiology, travel related obstetrics, psychiatry, occupational health, military and migration medicine, and environmental health.

The ISTM Research Award program provides moderate grants (between USD 1,000 and USD 5,000) each year through a peer-review process implemented by the ISTM Research and Grants Committee. These grants are designed to stimulate travel medicine research by supporting comprehensive research projects or, for larger projects, providing support for pilot studies to enable researchers to collect data/test hypotheses so that they can then apply to other agencies for more substantive research grants.

FP7 Call for Proposals Capacities Programme: Activities of International Cooperation Call - Strengthening European Research Facilities in Third Countries (FP7-INCO-2011-7)

The Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7) is the European Union (EU) main instrument for funding research in Europe. The broad objectives of FP7 have been grouped into four categories: Cooperation, Ideas, People and Capacities. For each type of objective, there is a specific programme corresponding to the main areas of EU research policy. Further information on each of these specific categories and their sub-divisions is available here or at the FP7 Factsheets (in Portuguese).

This Call for Proposal (
FP7-INCO-2011-7) is under the Capacities programme. The specific programme on Capacities aim to enhance research and innovation capacities throughout Europe and ensure their optimal use. The Capacities programme operates in seven broad areas, one is the International Cooperation (INCO) action. For more INCO activities please see the International Cooperation Portal

This Call aims to strengthening European research facilities in third countries (INCO-LAB). The EU Member States (MS) and Associated Countries (AC) have as an objective to increase their coordination in third countries, through in particular maximising the use of their own research facilities in these countries. The objective of the INCO-LAB activity is to use the joint research institutes funded by one or several Member States and located in third countries as a catalyst to structure and increase the cooperation with third countries.
The objectives of the INCO-LAB activity are to:
1.       Open the activities of the joint institutes to researchers from at least three different MS and AC other than those owning the facilities;
2.       Increase the scientific cooperation between researchers from the MS and AC and those of the host country through the involvement of additional researchers in ongoing research activities as well as in the preparation of new joint projects via the organisation of joint seminars, summer schools and similar activities;
3.       Prepare the way for opening the institutional arrangement of the joint institutes to additional MS or AC governments/ministries, research organisations.
The proposals must address all three objectives.
Data Limite: 15 March 2011 at 17:00 (Brussels local time). Home Page: http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/dc/index.cfm?fuseaction=UserSite.FP7DetailsCallPage&call_id=353

ICGEB Collaborative Research Programme (CRP) Research Grant

Collaborative Research Programme (CRP) was established in 1988 with the specific aim to:
1.       Stimulate collaborative research in Member States;
2.       Promote training of young scientists;
3.       Facilitate the creation of appropriate research facilities in promising Institutes.
The programme provides support for research projects in many fields of basic sciences, human healthcare, industrial and agricultural biotechnology and environmental bioremediation..
Data Limite: Complete applications must be sent to the ICGEB Liaison Officer in the applicant’s country of origin by 15 March annually.

ICGEB Prospective Meeting/Course Organisers Held at ICGEB Affiliated Centres

The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) conducts innovative research in life sciences for the benefit of developing countries. It strengthens the research capability of its Members through training and funding programmes and advisory services and represents a comprehensive approach to promoting biotechnology internationally. Affiliated Centres are established research institutes in Member States which have attained, or have the potential for, high standard research.

Laboratory courses of up to 10 days' duration are intended to train scientists and technologists in the theory and practice of advanced biotechnology research, as well as to address subjects and priorities of a regional nature. Training courses are to be conducted by the organising institute's staff and invited lecturers.

The programme also accommodates proposals for resarch workshops, symposia and conferences intended to disseminate scientific knowledge and enhance interaction of researchers and policy makers from ICGEB Member States. Research-orientated meetings are generally of two to five days duration.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (
NIAID), National Institutes of Health, encourages applications from institutions/ organizations that propose to conduct research on the causes, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of tropical diseases in endemic areas, including creating and sustaining research capacity in-country. The scope of the research to be supported is limited to Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and their corresponding vectors. Research may be focused on a single pathogen or more than one pathogen causing NTDs. Multi-disciplinary research and/or study of multiple pathogens are encouraged.
Research Program Projects and Centers Grant (P50): is intended to support any part of the full range of research and development from very basic to clinical; may involve ancillary supportive activities such as protracted patient care necessary to the primary research or R&D effort. See details at
P50 Grant Mechanism.
